The tradition of carving lovespoons is believed to have originated in Wales and dates back to the 17th Century. As explained in our books The Language Of Lovespoons and The Longest Lovespoon the tradition may have evolved from wooden cooking, serving or eating utensils, being decorated with various symbols.

It is thought that sailors used to make lovespoons-filling those laborious hours aboard ship whittling away with utmost determination in dimly lit cabins to make a spoon for their sweethearts. It is also thought that the young welsh ladies would collect lovespoons, thus leaving a trail of broken hearts within their community before choosing the fortunate man. Let us say therefore that a lovespoon is a tangible expression of love.

The lovespoon is an ideal gift for any occasion including birthdays, weddings, engagements, anniversaries and christenings. They may be given as tokens of engagement or betrothal, today however their use is varied and diverse.

Often there are symbols found on lovespoons which have many different meanings. For example a twist in a lovespoon means binding and growing together. A cross represents faith or memorials. A heart is obvious in it's meaning. The giving of one's heart to the recipient of the spoon. True love or just "I love you" or a simple message of love.
